Just the other day, I announced that the Tampa Terminal is back on track. The focus this time around is the Winter Haven intermodal yard and trackwork. The route has not seen any substantial work for one year, plus where trackwork has been done, is in dire need of work. Lakeland Jct - 10th Street is done, though, and Auburndale, Knights, Vitis (Lumberton to the portal), Kinder-Morgan, and the rest of WH will follow.

Because the trackwork involves a lot of new signalling, I plan to update my signals big-time. They will hopefully seek a new, individualized script. Such a script will also include options to indicate the particular aspect, ie: for a signal like the northbound absolute signal at 46th street in Miami, one can choose diverging movements will be authorized a Medium Advance Approach as the "clear" signal. (I don't know the through signal yet, think it's Approach). New vaders and cantilevers will be designed. This project should go hand in hand with the Miami Sub and FEC main so they get the optimal signals.

Also I'll probably be putting my SLR to use this time, taking texture shots for a new round of models. In dire need: Tri-Rail stations, railroad crossings, speed signs, buildings, signage, etc. for now. I plan to attempt the MIC Central Station at some point (wait, aren't they supposed to open on Friday?)

Tampa Terminal and the South Florida Mega Route will be given pretty even attention throughout the season. Those routes really have potential to provide for fun operations. Needless to say, they represent corridors that are ever changing and will see traffic increases in the future.Tolga E.http://www.blogger.com/profile/16240827052586930682noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3439108108381333805.post-40329709205322439152013-12-08T13:40:00.003-08:002013-12-08T13:40:36.843-08:00News Regarding the CSX Tampa Terminal RouteThe route I usually like to do in the winter-spring seasons is the CSX Tampa Terminal area from Tampa-Lakeland-Auburndale-Vitis and etc, pretty much CSX operations in the western half of Florida. Since we're getting back to that time of the year I've started to concentrate on it.

One of my conflicting issues with the route, however, is the ever-changing trackwork. Already areas that were modeled between 2011-2012 have changed drastically. Originally, I was going to ignore the changes, but due to the fact that the changes reflect more trains, and it will improve operational realism to do so, I am adding the new changes into the new year.

Key changes include:

Siding between Lakeland Junction and 10th Street near Kathleen

Siding in Knights

Super Siding between Lumberton (1 mile south of Vitis Junction) and Ellerslie (ex. Distant to Dade City)

Big improvements to Winter Haven including the new intermodal ramp set to open next year

Expect screens to show up over the Holiday break.Tolga E.http://www.blogger.com/profile/16240827052586930682noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3439108108381333805.post-26943374580989296072013-10-13T11:57:00.002-07:002013-10-13T11:58:06.894-07:00FEC KWE: 18 Mile Stretch WIPVery soon, I'll probably continue on either the Tampa Terminal or South Florida Mega Route!
But I do have more progress from the KWE... and for the CSX routes, this may serve as inspiration/ideas for swampy areas like here at MP ~407.

Progress is rolling around the 18 mile stretch, which is dense forest and swamps. It's the tip of the Florida Everglades and the extension runs right through. Today only US1 is there but of course I made the appropriate adjustments in the sim when doing this up.

Here's a shot of an intermediate signal. This is just 500 feet north of the canal bridge that is already complete in the version Nikos released. This used to be a siding but I made instead two stretches of double track at either end so that the 15-20 mile gap between here and Key Largo siding would be compensated and no train would have to wait trivially long for the other to pass.
Even though FEC in the end probably ran there at a loss, there were still numerous warehouses open to traffic and it seemed like it could have brought in dollars for the RR. Many warehouses with freight doors still stand there today and the only evidence left of the ROW south of Kendall stands between Palm Drive and Krome, while the rest has been absorbed to that evil busway.

Hence, I took that all into consideration when designing the trackwork for this area. And I am still not done.

There may be provisions for CSX to have switching rights here while FEC is responsible for their Card Sound intermodal ramp down south.Tolga E.http://www.blogger.com/profile/16240827052586930682noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3439108108381333805.post-55221974943706853862013-09-11T22:41:00.004-07:002013-09-11T22:41:43.559-07:00FEC Key West Extension - Boca Chica KeyI know this is mainly a CSX blog but the FEC route I'm doing of the twist in history is big stuff and I feel adapting it to this blog will be beneficial and not quite off base.

I learned a rather arbitrary history lesson. According to Google Maps, by the arrangement of the tree line, the portion of the railroad does not appear to follow US-1 like the virtual sim does... but it caves into the NAS Key West reserve base.

As such, I am relocating the FEC main back to there. Expect only good out of this; yes I wasted a few days landscaping an interchange with US-1 (that for the most part exists today) but by connecting the railroad to the base, we're opening up a number of logistical opportunities.

The old alignment is shown to the top. The newer and probably more historically accurate one stands on the bottom. What's just so nice is the additional switching challenges opened up with this realignment.

Unit ethanol trains can now come in and work the bays on the west side. General freight, high-and-wides, and military equipment can move in as well.

Points of interest:

Boca Chica passing siding was moved to the east of this island. Even though it is not in Boca Chica Key anymore, it keeps the name since it sounds interesting.

Double distant signal east of the entrance road to NAS Key West.

Power-Assisted turnout at the NAS leads. For sure, there'll be a switch leading out to Key West. Pending is a switch from the east.

As can be seen here, the old alignment was officially pulled up and the tracks that carried virtual FEC trains for five years are no longer on line and gone from the system.

One nice thing about working here is it allows me to expand upon areas only partially done by Nikos. For instance, the swing bridge was done but of course a whole lot of area on either side has been partly complete. Hence I'm working to landscape the sections through to complete the areas.

Another interesting thing about this is once all the work is said and done, the track snaps right in with the existing continuing sections of the mainline. So it is possible to say this was once a part of Flagler's Folly; but the history buffs know better.

Here are some of the changes I have taken to or will be taking to soon.

The route is the Florida East Coast Railway Key West Extension, not the FEC Little River Belt Line or FEC Miami Terminal. Much less, it is not the CSX GPC Spur. The FEC up to N Miami was part of the line and so was the CSX GPC Spur, as the Krome Quarry could be one of the rock pits used for rock trains to Key West. But I nixed the CSX connection, leaving it down to SW 312th Street where there's enough space to emit a train. Soon I will be pulling all boards north of Bird Road on the Little River Line and north/east of NW 27th Avenue on the mainline. The Buena Vista-Port operations may be included in a separate edition depending on if/how I roll this one out first. This will keep it focused on the completely nonexistent trackage while offering sufficient mileage to play with Tri-Rail trains as far as Vizcaya. Regardless, if there was to be a Tri-Rail coastal link incorporated in this, it would still be an incomplete service.

Spanish Harbor Siding, one of Nikos's first locations on the route, has been extended north to suit longer FEC Trains. With the times, computer performance has increased enough to accomodate 7,000' intermodals. The new trackage extended north butts against the Bahia Honda truss bridge. The gravel road and other crossings are also using Jointed Rail boards instead of the older boards.

To enhance the realistic track layout, a new siding was added at Long Key. As for turnouts, the SE now reads "Long Key" and the NE reads "Fiesta Key". This turns a 30 mile space between Marathon N and Whale Harbor S to a 10 mile gap for Marathon. This siding is 11,000 feet long approximately.

Track between Long Key and Whale Harbor is straightened and level above ground. No more plowing sand, Richard!

Plantation Key Industrial Park is being built. I'm using my noggin to make some use out of a couple of buildings of interest there. There's a lumberyard at MM88, and a marina/boat warehouse at the 89. In a patch of trees I've added an Amerigas and also used a natural greenhouse-ish area to be a fertilizer industry on the side. The area's perfect for a local to do easy switching but some customers and the lead stem from single track. Ouch! Can't delay mainline hotshots. In fact it's possible that "Old Highway" was the former FEC alignment.

Ballast will be updated to the two tone JR-grey and sand (for the patches of sand-ish material by the roadbed), like pretty much all other routes. This will enhance the quality and freshness of the route.

IM High Cube trains can only run single track as doublestack HCs won't fit under the Bahia Honda Bridge.

On the Mainland, Tri-Rail stations will be installed at: Southland Mall, The Falls, Naranja, and City of Homestead.

Amtrak Stations will be added at: Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine Key, and Key West.

Some of the URLs above link to recent screenshots, so enjoy those little previews of what's to come! This route is going to be fantastic and I'm glad I'm getting back to it. As of now in my routemaking department, there's only two routes to be focused on, the Tampa Terminal and the Key West Extension.

Tolga E.http://www.blogger.com/profile/16240827052586930682noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3439108108381333805.post-50019899546988865312013-08-08T21:50:00.003-07:002013-08-08T21:51:02.742-07:00More Key Lime Pie, Please? KWE Progress!I felt a bit motivated to pick up on the FEC Key West Extension project. Lots of the work I managed to do was to clean up some messy roadways, like the South Miami area. US-1 and Sunset is kind of sort of up to date with freshly programmed signals and a new station.

Also, what I'd call part 2 of the Dadeland area, part 1 completed last year, is almost done. This involves a fully functional crossing-intersection at SW 71 AV and SW 84 ST. Put a railroad in the picture and the intersection, with the garage of a Tri-Rail and Metrorail station behind, can be extremely busy. The traffic light design at 71st and 84th proper is partly inspired by International Drive and Conventon Way in Orlando, FL due to its feel and function.
Also, to answer the absence of a rail platform on the Belt line side, as I plan to operate a Tri-Rail line on this line, I'll be adding a station to the south (right) of 84th Street.

Also, I'll add that a more up to date road system will be developed over the coming months, as well as the possibilities of getting the crossings fitted with Ryan's new system. Traffic lights will also be done with hopefully LED coronas.

While the first two pics brought out the roadgeek in me, I saw fit to balance it with a pure railroad scene. I did a rough job of the Homestead Intermodal and Automotive Ramp in the throat between US-1 and Card Sound Road. The original working was skew to both, but I chose to have it parallel Card Sound more instead in a redo that was done the other day. Your pure Florida railroad scene of a FEC loco switching the ramp will be coming to a computer screen near you!

It is also from here where the Turkey Point Coal Trains will have a place to go. An equally level extension to the game map was made two miles east of here, allowing for a loop reasonably close to the actual power plant. That loop is connected to the looping IM yard lead via a spur and turnout by the interchange between US-1 and Card Sound. (This fourth image predates the third image)

More to come, including an ops session with JR's new FEC engines!

Since I moved to a pooched TS12 SP1 installation, I lost some files when trying to back up my content, and when I reinstalled the game to the correctly installed SP1 they showed up missing. A couple of obsolete signals of mine and dispensable assets from others show faulty but I think with those being removed or replaced, (and with a new signal system slowly in the works from yours truly), the route is back on track to be released in the future.

The missing dependencies were mainly textures that aid strongly in speeding up the routebuilding. The color textures form an atlas roadmap of the area which allows roads and infrastructure to be pinpointed easily.Tolga E.http://www.blogger.com/profile/16240827052586930682noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3439108108381333805.post-61508683244709336422013-06-19T16:43:00.001-07:002013-06-19T16:43:40.141-07:00Ryan's Railroad Crossings Due For ReleaseRyan V's (Ryanstrains) crossings which adopt the Safetran style will be put out on partner site SAXRT within the next couple of weeks in a big release. The go ahead was recently given for the signals to be broadcast over the Trainz community. I find this wonderful news and am extremely happy to see this happen.

I am affiliated with this project well because of my cantilevers. My Lincoln Industries cantilevers, which are all over CSX tracks nationwide, will be adopted to hold the scripting needed and will be integrated with his lights for inclusion and release.
Here are the family of signals slated for the first release.
Improvements, on paper, include better working splines, improved multiplayer and sessions; in-game means of downloading; better physics and a slightly improved CMP.

However, from what I hear it's a buggy service pack. It's causing some content to derail, and most importantly, some Jointed Rail content doesn't work.

Auran identified the derailment issue, and Jointed Rail has provided content hotfixes for the SP1 glitches. (more information http://jointedrail.com/content/updates/JRSP1Updates.pdf)

My two cents. I feel that a service pack shouldn't be downloaded until all of the glitches are weighed. Upgrading the game is generally a choice for the owner. I feel that while there needs to be people testing the ropes of the pack, it is wiser to hold back and see how much reception the pack gets. Technically upgrading can run the risk of having to re-install the game in the unlikely event your machine fails to boot up the game.

Some people in my Skype chat are having quite a number of issues. But, I really hope the issues get rectified and upgrading can be smooth. I am nonetheless looking forward to the improved features that SP1 is out to deliver.Tolga E.http://www.blogger.com/profile/16240827052586930682noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3439108108381333805.post-37706957983555237152013-02-23T13:15:00.004-08:002013-02-23T13:15:58.012-08:00Plant CityBack after a little break in Trainz. Plant City is now continuing to grow in Trainz, with me building outwards of the diamond. Much of this has been inspired by my recent trip to Plant City a couple of weeks ago.
There remains a whole lot of work to do. Much of the balance of it is to get Plant City to Auburndale completely finished. Also, before I graduate I hope to have quite a bit of S-line trackage towards Zephyrhills textured.

I have begun fancying the vantage point at Hialeah Market Station for the likes of O721, Y322, and Y220 as well as the usual melee of Tri-Rail trains.

The area is part of what defines Miami. The market next to me bears some classic resemblance. West Rail and the rail side of Hialeah Market have been, unfortunately, mere shells of what they were in the past. Back in 1995 or so, it was a bustling yard. Now, a house track became a Home Depot parking lot, the east track's customer stopped taking in rail shipments, and only one customer remains: Antique Brick and Stone.

Traditionally, on a lucky weeknight, Y220 will take freight to the customer.

Combining these factors has allowed for me to make and sim a mini Y220 in the area. Here are some pics:
This one being beautiful Lakeland, FL.

The city has numerous lakes and ponds around it and features Winston Yard out west, a big hub for BV ops.

Downtown feels like an old, classic town. Been there, done that. I railfanned the area several times lately which allowed plenty of images, videos, and knowledge of the area.
I ran an op session yesterday in the eastern section of the route with three trains in conflict of each other.

The story went that Q452 was going closer to being on the law, and E109 empty coal was in the way. E109 tucked into Winter Haven Siding to let Q452 pass so that it would hit Lakeland first.

A SB on the A-line, an R741 in game but in the place of Q187, was fast approaching once this train went past Auburndale. So I slid it into Carters... a perfect but close fit. The 4,800 foot siding can barely hold it.

Eventually the all business R741 overtook 452 on its run to Tampa.

After that, the two Miami trains went on happy and jolly.

This was a generally successful operation. One easy part was no one was in opposite directions to the train but overall it was a priority fight. I could just slam the drive button on all three but didn't choose to do so since the route was incomplete and signal information could be off.

Running three or more trains manually is pretty easy but you need to know all the lengths, locations, distances, and what siding can take them. Automatically it's all boring as you don't have control of the throttle and boy do I like to man it. One challenge is you may lose coordination so your train may end up doing a 60 in a 30.

This multiple train run is the baby step to future operations sessions. Lots of trains meet in the Tampa area, mainly around Tampa proper and along the S-line. When I went to CFL three trains met around Winston within 30 minutes and another was just east of the wye. Tucking trains in, dispatching them to pass each other, and other grueling tasks makes this fun. Expect more in the future.

Mainly (95%) an FEC route, I contract CSX freights to share trackage. Oleander will be redesigned as a funneling interchange and wye so both CSX trains for the Lehigh Spur and FEC trains from Hialeah down have fairly direct trackage. Also Homestead proper will allow CSX rock trains to be interchanged to FEC for shipment to the Keys (inspired off of the old K712/K711 to Tampa).

The main exploration with this route is commuter rail options for Homestead to West Palm. The idea can be -- simpler than you think. If the State or some agency to run commuter rail could get the busway plus the former FEC ROW between Kendall proper and Oleander, commuter rail can happen. And the big bucks can come from riders in Dadeland and South Miami. The best kicker is... for sure, the part between Oleander and Kendall is a no brainer to do, as long as you throw in a quiet zone.

I will be making a video series to explain this whole idea that I have in the future. Most of it will be narrative or a surveyor overview, but op sessions will also be a good part of it.

This does not mean I am leaving the Keys out. I should be retrofitting the trackage there much like has been done in Kendall but I will also be doing new areas at a good pace. Kendall was damn well retrofitted... Lots of CAB grass has been switched for higher res texture and the ballast... OH the ballast.... switched for the JR + TS2009 arrangement you see in many of my works.

The last time I shared updates to Auran was February 2010, so I guess that's why so much had to be brought up to date.
I have taken to a couple of changes, one of which is the use of Pofig's trees to outline the slash pine forests nearer to the tracks. While it lowers FPS at some locations, that can be fixed by future hardware upgrades. It does significantly improve the image quality though. The leaves in the model in use with this route do actually resemble the slash pines.
This is CR 655 at Main Street in Auburndale.

The patches of dirt is about correct, but the corrugated fence was never needed. The Street View (silly me for not looking) shows pilings in place.

Fortunately for this "by the map" builder, the image overlay was updated to an image from April 24. Goes to show an example of the rapid transformation of the route corridor. Actually, I wonder why the town planners did not cater to putting a sidewalk on Main Street. Isn't it the "main" street which embodies the commerce and whatnot for the town? Shouldn't it be accessible to all forms of transport? OK, yes, I want to photograph a train from that bridge. At least there's US HWY 92. ;-)
On a similar subject, ingame detailing of the area in Carters Siding started today. Fortunately, for the benefit of ops like Q251 and Q235, the siding was entirely laid down, signaled to the best of my ability, and frogged. The intersection of Memorial and Old Dixie Hwy is being done at the moment. Soon enough, the whole siding will be complete. The "business" that CSX does at the siding day-by-day could be a hint at one of the next TrainzWatching videos that I will be producing.

I will probably be working on another section of the Tampa Terminal. Much of this does owe to the fact that I was there twice in the last few weeks and acquainted better with the area. Most of this work will be done around the Carters Sub, finally hooking up the detailed Lakeland Jct to the well detailed Auburndale Connection area.Tolga E.http://www.blogger.com/profile/16240827052586930682noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3439108108381333805.post-4118221637777530102012-07-13T01:04:00.001-07:002012-07-13T01:04:35.778-07:00Updates at Auburndale

It can surely get interesting when you pass by an area you did in Trainz and notice something unusual.

Well, not to say I wasn't informed that the S-Line north of Vitis was getting some heavy duty refurb and upgrade work, and the signal at Central was installed. That doesn't seem nearly as image-changing as this.

The big thing I am speaking of is that overpass. This links Main St to a roundabout ramp to CR 655. Google Earth had a hint at it, but only some dirt work in 2010. It is now... complete.
I had not had that thing in mind at all! I thought it was just some dead grass or something when I saw the map. I didn't bother to look into the street view, and now that I did, I can see piers under construction.

The bridge flies over from Main St in a SW direction to which it does a 180 left turn to meet CR655. I believe it is a stop sign intersection, but can see traffic lights if traffic is heavy enough.

Also I didn't really know that 4-1-1 head signal existed. Thought it was a searchlight, but much like New River (Distant to S Dania SB and Distant to Whalen NB) in Miami, it was one of those quiet upgrades. Shame for Miami on that end, as there are now no pure SAL signals anymore on this line; all of them are now either DV or modern colorlights.

Gotta get working in Trainz now! Those views from 92 in real life are... might I say... gorgeous!Tolga E.http://www.blogger.com/profile/16240827052586930682noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3439108108381333805.post-39285695666824232112012-05-13T08:15:00.001-07:002012-05-13T08:15:26.477-07:00Miami Sub Trainz Route on HoldDue to a focus on wanting to finish the Tampa Terminal a little faster, the mildly conflicting Miami Terminal will be on hold until TT is complete. My main blame is lack of available assets to furnish the route. In the future I should wind up being well off enough to design the FP&T superstructure, the warehouses and buildings along the O717 corridor and many more items.Tolga E.http://www.blogger.com/profile/16240827052586930682noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3439108108381333805.post-1964618653096543072012-05-12T18:07:00.000-07:002012-05-12T18:07:08.859-07:00Some PicsMe running a mock T081 through the corridor...
And so I introduce you to the town of Woodberry, situated just east of I-75's overpass over the S-Line. HSBC has an office there and a few other niche offices box around the condominiums in this clean looking suburb.
Updates are being posted from Surveyor now in a semi regular basis. I am doing what soothes me as some high-volume tests are kicking in this month. Expect more from Tampa Terminal due to its easy level of difficulty compared to the Miami Sub.Tolga E.http://www.blogger.com/profile/16240827052586930682noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3439108108381333805.post-89081361820627629062012-05-06T10:53:00.002-07:002012-05-06T10:53:54.439-07:00JR Juice Train Pack and Tampa Terminal route...Are they made for each other?
